Today, I took the long way back to Alabama. It was through north Georgia, specifically, the Blue Ridge mountains. Every corner I fell more for the car. Every apex, every exit, every whistle and pop, was incredible. It, like the Slowrunner, makes you want to drive like an ass.
I haven’t smiled as much as I had today in a while. Until about 250 miles in...
View from an empty mountain road, EMPTY.
That’s when I pulled off the road, and turned the car off to look out. When I turned the car back on, the screen didn’t come on(Second time this has happened). Not a huge deal, but was slightly annoying to have to stop again and recycle the car.
But that wasn’t the only issue, the next is a slightly larger problem. Unintended acceleration. Luckily being a manual, I just popped it out of gear and it stopped, but it did a full 2nd gear pull all by itself... Probably going to get that one checked out...
Pictures for your time:
LOOK AWAY SVEND, IT WILL ONLY BRING YOU PAIN
Edit: r/Fiesta ST may have solved my problem. If cancel CC, it still holds the set speed, even if stop, shift, etc. With the location of the CC buttons where they are, I probably bumped resume. So basically it was going to try it’s hardest to hit 80 in second gear.

Where are you heading? If I’m not mistaken you’re from the Foley area?

My biggest gripe about that car is that, even when one is still in full control of the car apparently, 2nd gear still feels like I’m just along for the ride.
Despite my GTI being boosted as well, I always feel like I am the one dictating what goes on with the throttle.
I also suspect that having a 2.0L turbo engine makes the boost much more linear than having a 1.8L boosted engine trying to reach the same power levels.

Exact opposite end of the state is where I’m from. I’m from 3 miles due west of the rocket in the middle of I-65. That’s where I am.

*1.6
And no, 2nd gear normally feels fine, in fact it’s a rocket in 2nd, but it literally accelerated on it’s own. My right foot wasn’t near the pedal.

So basically you’ve formed an emotional attachment with the 4Runner that the Fiesta is failing to live up to? Cause one minute you love it, the next it seems you can’t wait to get rid of it.

Nevermind. Apparently I have no clue who I’m thinking about. But yeah I know where you are.

I love it, but it’s more problematic than I’m used to, because I’ve written the first year of 4Runner ownership out of my mind. The year we sank around $4k into it...

She looks good, dirt is one of those things that happen when your enjoying the car. Plus it means you get to wash her. Yay. win win.
RE: Unexpected acceleration. Definitely get it looked at. Hopefully Ford will take care of it no cost to you as it’s a known fault with some.

Want’s to make an autonomous car by 2020
Can’t make a car that doesn’t suffer unintended acceleration.

Oh sweet, didn’t know it was a known problem. Thanks!
But yeah, I’ll wash it when I get back. Provided the weather is okay. Then it will just immediately get dirty again because my driveway is gravel, but for 10 whole minutes it will be clean.

Hmm, that’s an odd case of unintended acceleration. Could it be the throttle body getting stuck open?

If you check out some Ford, Fiesta or ST forums you’ll see a couple of threads about it here and there.
Get in touch with Ford or the NHTSA and see if there is any recalls outstanding that you could take with you to the dealership.

I’m probably stuck in my old ways but I like older cable-operated throttle bodies with springs that you could easy inspect and check to ensure they did their job in preventing a stuck-open throttle body.

You say that, but the 4Runner has done that.

I thought it was a 1.6 but second-guessed myself.
Yes, 2nd absolutely takes off. Which I do not appreciate. I never felt like I was the one driving when the boost hits. My GTI is far more linear in that regard.
That is not to say the FiST isn’t a riot. It is utterly fantasticly fun. I just wanted for something more grown up instead.
Sounds like I was not far off in my thoughts about not being the one driving the car then...

I edited the post, I think the problem is solved. It just is a bad design, nothing really wrong per say.

Sounds like sinking the money into the 4Runner has paid off, you’ve still got it. I’m just curious to hear what you have to say about the FiST as it’s one thing for someone to review one, it’s different when someone lives with it day in and day out.

It’s fine. It’s kind of like Kinja. It’s a great idea, just not well thought out in a lot of places. For instance, my edit up there. There are a few “Why the hell?”’s that I’ve noticed in 10 months. It’s a fun all arounder, but it has quite a few flaws that make it far from perfect. Would I buy one if I could go back? Yes, it is building my credit, and for the most part I do enjoy it. Would I buy another one in the future? No. Will I keep it for a while? Probably, as it would be financially stupid to dump it now, and I do enjoy it.

They certainly do seem like fun little cars, like a good car to buy for the young enthusiast.
I guess my car buyin experience was a little different cause I had the means to get something that was on a different level. Sometimes I wished I’d gotten a new M3, then I either drive mine or look at it and it’s like no, I made the right choice.

Another question I forgot to ask myself:
Are they the most fun new car you can buy for the money? Yes.
If you spent $5k more could you get something better? Yes

They do seem like an unbeatable deal. If you were going to do this again, would you spend the extra 5k and get something different?
Personally, I think because I’ve been a BMW fan boy for so long, I’d spend the money on a 6MT 1/3 series and live with the repair bills.
